Autism and Speech Delay: Understanding Communication Challenges

Speech delay can be one of the early signs noticed in some autistic children, but not every child with speech delay is autistic. Children on the autism spectrum may communicate differently, such as using fewer words, repeating words or phrases, or relying more on gestures and other forms of communication.

Communication challenges can vary greatly from one child to another. Some autistic children may speak fluently but find social communication difficult, while others may use very few or no spoken words.

Early support, including speech and language therapy when appropriate, can help children develop communication skills that work for them.

Every child communicates differently—understanding their way of communicating is the first step toward meaningful connection.
